FAQ > Technical
Do the plugs connect directly to the internet?
No. All GridDuck hardware is connected to the internet via the GridDuck Hub. The GridDuck Hub is installed close to all the smart devices in your home/business, and links the smart plugs, relays, inline cables and clamps to the internet.
How does the GridDuck Hub connect to the internet?
The GridDuck Hub is connected to the internet through the WiFi network of your home/business, or via ethernet.
If your local network can be a little unreliable, we also offer 4G connectivity to ensure that you are always connected.
Is Gridduck secure?
Yes.
GridDuck’s peripheral hardware is connected to the GridDuck Gateways as part of an IoT system. This is the same communications protocol used by the UK’s smart meter system for electricity monitoring and control systems.
The GridDuck Gateway connects to the Internet via a TLS secured socket. This is the same standard used in secured online transactions everywhere, such as online banking. The connection ensures the communications are encrypted (i.e. private), authenticated (i.e. cannot be spoofed or faked) and reliable (i.e. none can go missing).
Once in GridDuck’s cloud platform, the system is protected using the same systems and processes that other organisations use on cloud platforms, such as encrypted databases, salted and hashed passwords, multi-factor authentication etc.
The company’s cybersecurity and information security systems have been certified and are routinely audited. GridDuck’s entire system has also undergone third-party penetration testing to identify any weaknesses.
