Why Energy Matters

According to a report from the Energy Efficiency Financing scheme, the UK’s hospitality sector could be wasting around £180 million of energy per year. Alongside this, in a recent survey of hospitality managers, energy waste was cited as a top irritation.

In 2022, we’ve seen energy prices rise significantly. Surging wholesale gas and electricity prices are likely to create significant increases for businesses, especially as several business contracts will come to an end in April, June and October 2022. New rates are likely to reflect growing wholesale prices and for energy-intensive SME’s such as restaurants, bars and hotels, this could prove very challenging.

Tracking your electricity costs

Do you know how much you are spending on energy? Do you know what you are spending it on, and when?

GridDuck can track your electricity consumption in real-time, for your whole building, or for individual appliances. We can also take in external data feeds to our dashboard, for example from your gas or water measurements.

Savings opportunities in Hospitality

For many hospitality businesses, half their electricity goes to catering equipment, cooled storage also consumes a lot of electricity.

Central London Hotel

Here are two charts. On the left is the 5-day consumption graph of a central London hotel, with the appliances in use almost continuously for 24 hours (even though the hotel closes for the night). So the question is – how can they save energy?

On the right is a 24-hour chart of a train station coffee shop. You can see the early morning spike, but also the nightly standby use. As the difference between these graphs demonstrates, our system allows for significant savings during idle periods.

London Cocktail Bar

We helped a London cocktail bar to save 28% by switching off their drinks fridges and ice machines out of hours.

We connected smart plugs to each appliance, the client then set the times (red and green chart) to ensure fridges and ice machines (blue chart) were on from noon to midnight.

A Hospitality Testimonial:

“I’ve had about 3 and a half years of working with GridDuck over numerous projects. I’ve always found them to be very quick-moving. If you’ve got any problems, GridDuck will look into them straight away.

The dashboard is a dream to set up and breaks up consumption into simple elements, making it easy to cut down. Overall, the system is amazingly user-friendly. We have had no issues.”
